How to Play Poker

Poker

When playing poker, the best hands are known as hands with high cards. The highest-ranking hand is called a full house, and is made up of three of the same rank and two of another. The flush is a sequence of 5 cards of the same rank, from ace to 10; it can only be tied if another player has a royal flush of the same suit. Other hands are known as straights, and can consist of five of the same rank, or any other combination of cards.

In poker, players make bets by either raising or folding, and they can check the pot. When another player raises, all players must either fold or call. The player who has the highest card, called a raise, collects the pot, or fold. The cards are usually shuffled and passed from player to player. The dealer has the last right to shuffle the cards, and he must offer the shuffled pack to his opponent for a cut.

Other poker games include razz and stud. Both of these games use the same deck of cards, but the rules are different. In razz, the goal is to have the lowest hand possible, which can be anything from an ace to a pair. In stud poker, players can swap cards between hands, but a queen beats a pair of eights.
