The Basics of Poker

Poker

Generally speaking, Poker is a game played by a group of players around a circular table. The objective is to make the best hand possible. The game is played with cards of varying quality, though a standard pack of cards is usually used.

The best hand is a combination of three of the same suit, plus a fifth card. The best possible straight is the eight-nine. If the players have more than one five-card straight, the higher card wins.

A straight flush is a five-card straight in sequential order. The ace of diamonds is sometimes a wild card.

There are many other variants of Poker. One of the most popular is Hold’em, which is played by a group of people around a circular table. The game has specific rules that must be followed.

Generally, poker is played with poker chips. These are normally made of plastic or ceramic. These chips are gathered in the center of the table and the players make their bets in the middle.

In a live game, the initial dealer is chosen by each player receiving a card from the shuffled deck. The dealer may be a dedicated button that moves one spot clockwise after each hand.

The dealer cuts the deck and deals cards to each player. The cards may be dealt face up or face down. The card to the left of the dealer is referred to as the small blind. The dealer then proceeds to the left and to the right.
