The Basics of Poker
Poker is a game of chance in which players try to create the best possible hand from a set of cards. The player with the highest hand wins the pot.
The game begins with a deal of cards by the dealer. The player to the left of the dealer is dealt first, and cards are then dealt to the remaining players in a series of betting intervals (called “rounds”).
Once each betting round is over, all bets are gathered into a central pot. The pot is won by the player with the best hand, or by a bet that no other player calls.
In many variants, each player is required to make an ante before the deal. This ante is usually equal to a minimum bet.
After the ante has been made, each player is dealt a hand. The hands are ranked, according to their suit, and the highest-ranking hand is called the button.
If a hand is tied, the tie is broken by a player’s second-highest card. The player who has the higher card gets to start on the button.
