What is Casino?
Casino is a place where people can gamble and play games of chance. Casinos watch these gamblers closely and provide them with special attention, such as comps (free goods or services).
Martin Scorsese’s 1995 movie Casino focuses on Sam “Ace” Rothstein, who runs the Tangiers casino in Las Vegas. He tries to live a civilized lifestyle with his money-conditional wife Ginger, but the mob takes an interest in his business. His life gets even more complicated when he is approached by Nicky Santoro, a Mafia made man.
While the characters in Casino are driven by greed and corruption, Scorsese makes it clear that no one is completely innocent. He portrays Ginger as a victim of her pimp Lester Diamond (James Woods). She even admits to Ace that she feels for him at times, though she does not love him back. Moreover, studies show that casinos actually bring more harm than good to a community. They lower home values, encourage crime and poverty, and suck up local wealth.
