What is a Slot?

A narrow depression, perforation, or opening, especially one for receiving something such as a coin or letter. Also used of a position or assignment within a sequence or series: I booked your haircut for the 2 pm slot.

A device or space in a machine that accepts coins or paper tickets for a chance to win a prize, typically a small amount of cash or goods. It may be mounted on a table or wall and is operated by pulling a handle or pressing buttons. Modern machines use random number generators to determine the location of symbols on a rotating reel, but many retain a lever as a skeuomorphic design element.

(computing) An area in memory or on a disk where a file can be stored. A slot> element is used to declare this type of space, and its name attribute specifies the filename that will be associated with it.

In aviation, a scheduled time for an aircraft to take off or land at a busy airport, determined by air traffic control and based on the availability of runway slots. Slots are a critical component of reducing the delays caused by multiple aircraft attempting to land or take off at the same time.

A video game that features a spinning wheel and multiple pay lines, often accompanied by wild symbols that substitute for other icons to form winning combinations. Some slots have progressive jackpots, and some are linked to other machines to accumulate a joint jackpot.
