What is a Slot?
A slot is a narrow notch, groove or opening, such as a keyway in machinery or a slit for coins in a vending machine. The term is also used as a metaphor for an area of opportunity, especially in business. A “slot” in a business plan or schedule may refer to an unfilled position, an opportunity for growth, or a potential for profit.
A slot may be the shape of a window, door or other opening; it can also be an area of opportunity in a business plan, schedule, or project. A slot in a type wheel is the gap cut in the center of the screwhead S, which connects to the pin p by its cylindrical end.
In a casino, a slot is the place where a coin or paper ticket with a barcode is placed to activate a machine that spins and rearranges symbols. The player then receives credits based on the pay table of the machine. Symbols vary, but classics include fruit and stylized lucky sevens. Depending on the machine, the credit meter is displayed on a screen above or below the reels. A symbol of the game’s theme is also usually shown on this display. The lights on the machine may flash to indicate change needed, hand payout request, a problem with the machine, or that a jackpot has been won. In some cases, the slots are grouped together into a carousel.
